THE FOX REPORT SPECIAL : SNES9x

Compiled by the Fox (Emulators Unlimited Site Maintainer)

OFFICIAL STATEMENTS EXCLUSIVELY GIVEN TO ONLY EMULATORS UNLIMITED

GARY HENDERSON (Main Author)

Snes9x development never stopped, not by me atleast. Its just I wasn't
allowed to release it. It was 'suggested' that I don't release any more
versions of Snes9x on the Internet. I was also told that Nintendo were about
to close down all other SNES emulators, but that obviously hasn't happened.

Cruel joke, or something more sinister? Actually, for reasons that I can't
go into, I think it was something more sinister.

I found someone else to actually release Snes9x so I'm still staying inside
the suggestion.

SuperFX emulation is no joke. Look at an old Snes9x README file in the credits
section to see why SuperFX emulation has actually happened. The music in
Yoshi's Island is great, by the way, its a real shame I can't see Yoshi, the
baby or the baddies at the moment otherwise the game would work 100%.

In fact no 'FX game is fully playable as of yet, at least on the version I
saw. Other SNES emulator authors already have all the Snes9x code so I don't
expect 'FX emulation to be confined to just Snes9x.

No idea if DOOM works - the only copy available for testing is corrupt.

No idea of a release date, sorry, but I expect it to be weeks rather than
days. I know there's been some problems with the DOS port - the port that
most people will be interested in. Also, the transparency code is very
slow at the moment and I think that will get rewritten before the first 'new'
release.

Snes9x is still mainly written in C/C++, though I hope that will change when
the source code gets released and other people start working on it. My
advice is use the emulator that the game you want to play works best on.
Don't keep waiting for what's to come, use what's available already. I've
heard from feenix65 that development has been slow of late since he got
Tetris Attack working 100%!

Gary

CHAD KITCHING (PLATFORM PORTER)

All I can say is that everything on Jerremy's page is the truth. It's not
a hoax, and it'll run FX games (even if there are some bugs to be worked
out before an official release). Why bite the hand that feeds you? It'll
be out soon enough, just be patient. From what I've heard, all the FX
games shown on that page work reasonably well.

Chad

JOHN STILES (PLATFORM PORTER)

I have not seen the recent builds with any of the new features. I can assure
you, however, that it's no Bull Shit. The return of SNES9X is very real.

John

1.What are your current thoughts about the return of the Snes9x emulator?

I think it's great! It helps bring up the liveness of the snes emulation scene!

2.Do you think that the whole 'Super FX chip' emulation is legit and if so, why?

It's legit since the docs are somewhat available.

3.Who do you think the new authors of the emulator are?

Beats me. But even if I know, I'm sure I'm not supposed to tell.

4.Does ZSNES have plans for Super FX Emulation in the future?

There are plans. But our time schedule is a bit tight though.

5.Whats next on the plans for ZSNES?

I can't really say much here. I guess the usual which are mainly bug fixes and stuff.

6.What roms currently work on the lightgun support?

Lightgun support? I guess you mean Super Scope support. Well, basically every game I tried that uses the super scope and doesn't run into a 65816/spc700 bug pretty much work.

EMAIL WARS 11

The Fox

v

Marshall Gladstone (SSEmu author)

1.Please could you give me some details about yourself and why you chose the Saturn to Emulate?

My name is Marshall Gladstone and I am a programmer in many different computer languages.
I recently quit working for the government to program full-time on my own. For the government,
I worked on GIS (Geographical Infomation Systems) projects, which included heavy use of computers
and the programming of them. I have a good, working knowlege of C, C++, SML, AML, Perl, and every
variation of Basic known to man. I also have some knowledge of Assembly and Pascal. I chose to
emulate the Saturn because it is, without doubt, the best game console available (with Playstation
at a close second). I particularly enjoy the Saturn's RPG's.

2.What is next on the plans for the next version of SSemu?

The next version (0.06) is basically a re-write of the emulation code to be non-specific, portable
C and C++ code. Plans for its features include a working PCM sound emulation as well as the music.
The SH-2 processor emulation code that I have will also most likely be implemented in 0.06. This
release is also going to be a DOS version, rather than Windows as in the first release (0.05).

3.What title would you like to see fully working first?

This is a no-brainer. Dragon Force.

4.Why do you think that future versions of SSEmu will be needed to run with the use of a 3d card (eg.3dfx)?

When the 3D graphics engine is finally implemented, it would be too slow without hardware acceleration.
With the help of a 3Dfx card, for example, you would be able to get a decent frame-rate.

5.When do you plan to implement 3d?

3D graphics will be implemented as soon as 2D graphics have been implemented. Both VDP's must be emulated
before either can be done, but I'm planning on 2D being implemented within the next two releases.

6.What are your three favourite Saturn Titles?

First would be Dragon Force, then Shining of the Holy Ark, then Panzer Dragoon (1 or 2).

7.What are your thoughts on the Snes9x project and do you think that its legit (ie SuperFx chips emulated)?

As far as whether it's legit or not, I cannot say. However, I do believe that the SuperFX chip can be
emulated with great accuracy and, if someone's going to do it, it seems that it has to be the people of
the Snes9X team. I would really like to see the SuperFX chip emulated.

8.What is your current favourite emulator (except SSEmu)?

My favorite emulator would have to be Genecyst because it emulates my second favorite game console, the
Sega Genesis.

9.If not the Saturn what other machine would you like to emulate?

I would like to see the Nintendo 64 emulated because it's games can be fairly easily copied to and from
the Internet. Saturn games, which are contained on CDs, are really too large to put on some server.

10.Realistically do you think that this time next year 32 bit console emulators will be running like the Snes9x and Genecyst's of today?

I think it's definitely plausible, especially if I can help it. With all the documentation I have on the Saturn, I should be able to
emulate the Saturn to within about 95% accuracy before the year is out.

11.What do you think of the Satan Emulator?

Well, because it is only usuable on demo Saturn CD's, I wasn't able to test it. However, from what I read in the README file and from what I've heard around the emulation arena, I would say that it probably less technologically advanced than SSEmu. As far as other Saturn emulation projects go, I wish them all luck in their attempt to do what everyone seems to be waiting for; a Sega Saturn emulator.

v

Richard Bush (RAINE author)

Q1.What's the latest news on the RAINE emulator and what works at the
>present?

Firstly, Thanks for the interest :).
I guess the lastest things of interest are that some games now run
at 60fps on my p120 (mainly thanks to the Starscream 68000 engine
and also rewriting the gfx code in asm...). These games are Rainbow Islands,
Rastan and Toki. Other games that are working well now are
WrestleFest and SnowBros (some of the monsters are walking backwards
in SnowBros, they were fine with the UAE engine, so I think it must be
to do with Starscream... I'll have to find the dodgy opcodes...).
Also, Terra Formation is looking ok (it's not correct, but not that far
off).

Q2.Right, the question that everyone is wishing to ask, is it true that
RAINE will support WWF Wrestlefest and if so, what is the current status
of this emulator (eg how it works, sound etc)?

I've been working on WrestleFest, the gfx are about 90% correct (just need
to clean up the clipping of sprites). Palette is now 100% correct all the
time (as far as we've played). Controls are mapped (to the keyboard, need to
add joystick support). Um, sound is not attempted at all yet, I'd like to
find someone to work on that, as I'm not sure about emulating sound chips...
It runs on my p120 drawing every 4th frame, but the gfx have not been
rewritten in asm (that should more than double the speed, it did for Toki,
Rastan etc...).

Q3.Have you thought of adding support for the WWF Superstars arcade
game?

Not really, but that's because I don't think the roms are available...
If they get dumped, I'll give it a go (as long as they are no too big,
I only have 16mb...).

Q4.Will Wrestlefest be included in RAINE's next release?

Yes, I'll try to release it within 7 days (probably on Saturday).

Q5.Any chance of the date of the next release?
>
Saturday, probably...

Q6.What are your thoughts on the re-imergance of the Snes9x project and
on their statement saying that SuperFx will be supported?

Excellent news! I still like to use snes9x for some games, though ZSnes
has come so far and does a lot that snes9x 0.24 does not... I read that
the new snes9x developers might even release the sourcecode. I really
hope that happens.

Q7.What arcade games would you like to see emulated that are not in the
RAINE emulator to date?

Liquid Kids (Taito)... I'd really like to see these roms dumped so I could
at least take a look (I'm not sure if it is 68000 based). Also, I hope there
will be a NewZealandStory emulator soon (there was one in development, but I
don't think it's getting anywhere). NewZealandStory is z80, so It's not really
good for me to try it (I'm sticking to 68000 based systems).
I'd also like to see a NeoGeo emulator soon...

Q8.How much is left to do before the next release?

I'd like to rewrite some of the WreslteFest gfx routines in asm,
also I need to tidy a lot of stuff up... I might remove some of the
unplayable stuff too (eg. Robocop and BadDudes, which have
at least three other emulations being worked on for them).

Q9.Other than RAINE what is your favourite emulator?

Ah, I guess Mame for the huge number of games (esp. Bubble
Bobble). I'm very keen on Rage right now too :).

Q10.What are your three favourite video arcade games?

1: Bubble Bobble
2: Bomb Jack
3: Sega Rally

David Michael (Magic Engine / Dragon Ninja Arcade Emu author)

1.What do you think about the Snes9x situation?

I don't have a lot of things to say on Snes9x; I didn't really
follow all what happened. I guess it's good for the emulation
world, Snes9x was a very promising emulator, and if what I heard
is true, this new version will surely be impressive.

2.Is there are any news regarding the progression of the Magic Engine
>Emulator?

Nothing visible yet, for the moment I work more on the internal
of the emulator, I'm completely re-writing all the emulation engine.
That will give more flexibility to add new features and to enhance
the compatibility.

3.How is the Dragon Ninja Arcade Emulator looking at this time and what
is else is planned to be supported?

It's looking good, we had some problems with sprites lately but that
has been fixed. For the moment just Dragon Ninja is planned, we will
see later if support for other games will be added.

4.Are you considering making an emulator based on another platform, if
so which platform?

MagicEngine takes all my time, that lets me few time to think
to another project. There are a few other platforms I'd like
to emulate, but that's secret. ;)

5.Are you involved in any other projects other than the Magic
Engine/Dragon Ninja emulators?

No. But I'm not that involved in Dragon Ninja, Nicolas
Hamel is doing all the work, I just help him.

6.What other arcade game(s) would you like to see emulated other than
Dragon Ninja?

Oh... Quite a lot. :) My wish would be to see more recent arcade
games emulated, more games from the 90-95's would be nice.

WIERD HAPPENINGS!

Whilst getting up this morning I was listening the my local UK radio station 'Radio 1' and they had a segment called 'Wierd Happenings' where the callers phone up with some wierd and strange, but true stories. It was very interesting to hear that someone had found their old master system in the attic along with a few games, one namely was Sonic The Hedgehog. They played the music off one of the levels off Sonic the Hedgehog and it was hilarious but strange to release that this music strangely sound familiar......it sounded like the most recent Janet Jackson single 'Everywhere I go' !!! But this game was first released some seven years ago !! strange but true.

The exact level is the 4th level of the game, the Bridge Level just after the first boss. I recommend that you try it out as it is the likeness is so much that its unbelievable! it works 100% on the message master system emulator.

EMULATION CAMP v EMULATION HAPPENINGS

Interesting and surprising little battle between two sites this week :) Emulation Camp (maintained by Zoop/Lil) and Emulation Happenings (maintained by WilD) have been slagging each other off on each individual site lately. Check some of these comments out :

Statement printed by WilD on the Emulation Happenings site (Printed 23/01/98)

Wild here with a little note. It seems our dear friend Zoop over at Emulation Camp is upset that I am 'ripping him off'. I find it rather amusing that it has taken him over a month to understand the concept (yes a big word there) of Emulation Happenings. I freely admit to taking news from other sources to add to the news that I gather. I have a special page devoted to thanking those sources. Perhaps my thanks for Zoopy isn't in a big enough font for him. Seems old Zoopy is rather pissed off at me for banning him too. Ah well such is life. Go to undernet if you don't like it. Anyways for those who have a brain and understand the concept of my page in gathering ALL the news (or almost all) I thank you for your support. For those of you that hate me, frankly I don't care go whine elsewhere since I don't really care. This site will continue. I will get my news from Zoop-o-rama's page and I will continue to credit my sources. Thank you - WILD

Reply printed by Zoop/Lil on the Emulation Camp site (Printed 24/01/98)

Understand this concept wildlele`: We're doing all the work, you're taking all the credit. If you're site had original news and was having it stolen word for word to be used for another's benifit, you'd be doing what we are doing now - informing the rest of the emulation community about your actions. - Zoop

Follow-Up statement printed by Zoop/Lil on the Emulation Camp site (Also Printed 24/01/98)

This is to inform people that stealing webpage news word for word without credit is a serious offense. wildlele` of Emulation Happenings was set up and cought today for trying cut and paste news printed on this page. Zoop had put hidden messages between in the HTML to make it invisble until the text was selected, such as to cut and paste. Highlight the UFE and Stonx articles below to see the messages. wildlele` admitted to seeing the messages by e-mailing Zoop the following statement:

Wild, do not cut and paste!
hahahhahahahahhahhahhahaha
hahahhahahahahhahhahhahaha
hahahhahahahahhahhahhahaha
hahahhahahahahhahhahhahaha
hahahhahahahahhahhahhahaha

hahahhahahahahhahhahhahaha
hahahhahahahahhahhahhahaha

A copy of the e-mail document can be found here. Both Zoop and I feel wildlele`s actions were immature to say the least. I confronted him on Efnet #emu about it, where he admitted to stealing news (and not just from EmuCamp, but from Emu News Service, EmuXpress, Dave's Video Game Classics, and many other places as well), saying he didn't care he stole news, and then promptly banned me from the room. His actions today have led us to choose to remove Emulation Happenings from the links page forever. Also because he would not be sensible about his problem, we have removed the link to the Efnet #emu Homepage as well... this will be reversed if their act is cleaned up. (They are known to ban people for the fun of it - I witnessed them ban all of Compuserve while I was there, and was banned myself for stating that I've never seen an emulator that did not need ROM images. How they can disagree with that, I'll never know.)
This news and the e-mail will also be sent to the maintainers of sites that have also had their HTML ripped. We encourage anyone who visits Emulation Happenings to please discontinue your support for wildlele`s actions.

He,he,he talk about being bitchy - I will keep you informed on any changes to this situation :)

BORED.....NO NEW EMULATORS COMING SOON.....READ THIS!

At this present time on the Emulation scene, various sources are saying that this has been the biggest lull in months, many emulators have promised a lot but have not delivered (with the exceptions of the MAME & PSemu updates). We can reveal that there is an emulator due to be released VERY VERY soon. If you want to know more about this.....then listen to the Audio Show this Thursday for more details on this situation....and remember Emulators Unlimited will let you see this Emulator's first release, once released :) Note: A release date will be given also on the audio show :)

AUDIO SHOW....WE NEED A INTRO

If anyone can supply the Audio Show with a musical introduction ditty. The best one will be mentioned both on this site and on the Audio Show.

FINAL FANTASY 7 ON PC !

Well I know that this news does not concern Emulation but its news that will make PC gamers a lot happier ! :) EIDOS last week secured the official rights to produce a PC version of the Playstation classic Final Fantasy 7 and is due to be released this summer.

Can't wait :)

ARE PC GAMES TO TOUGH (NON-EMULATOR RELATED)?

If you find PC games like Grand Theft Auto, Turok the Dinosaur Hunter etc too tough then when not have a look at this excellent cheat complation. It also has exclusive cheats (very hilarious) for Fifa 98 and Virtua Cop 2

Download it here

DOWNLOAD SPACE

If there's anyone out there whom can spare between 100 - 300 mb space for downloads, I will re-start up the rom downloads and also store all emulators on this site, I have exclusive and very rare roms, but cannot give them to you due to lack of space and bandwidth. If anyone can help please contact me on sejr@garswoodutd.demon.co.uk. We have had few offers - but yet no replies :(
