GameBoy Emulation

The gameboy is one of the few systems that has been emulated almost flawlessly. VGB-DOS and windows both do a very good job of running just about any game that you throw at them. VGB-DOS even has near perfect sound support, something which none of the SNES emulators have even attempted to do, . Another advantage to gameboy emulation, is that there are HUGE ROM libraries on the net, and finding ROMs for the gameboy is much easier than for any other system. Also, as the development of VGB slows to a crawl, a new EMU Game Boy '97 has popped up, so there will still be something to look forward to in the area of Gameboy emulation.

VGB-DOS is the best emulator for any system in my opinion. Yes, it is only gameboy, and thus isn't as difficult to emulate as many others, but it does a superb job at what it is supposed to do.  The emulator was originally written for Unix/X by Marat, then it was ported to DOS by Marcel de Kogel, and more recently has been updated by Hans de Goede. Unfortunately, however, Marat has requested that the emulator be discontinued, so if there are ever any updates, they will be simply bug fixes, not new features.

VGB-WIN is much like the DOS port, but it doesn't have sound, and isn't quite as fast. The future of this emulator was comprimised when people began to distribute registered copies and Marat got pissed, so don't expect an update anytime soon.

This new EMU for the gameboy system is written by the author of NESA, and is very promising. The speed and compatibility are both quite impressive, and the project is only a few weeks old. Written in 100% 32-bit assembler, and having sound...this is certainly one to watch!
