you can't win against him the first time you fight. your party gets their @$$ whipped and you have to retreat. then you journey to the Ladea Tower in the east to get the Psyco-Wand. this removes the magic barrier and leads you to the final fight with him

Get KGen. As far as I know Phantasy Star IV works without freezing on KGen, even in the battle with Lashiec. Trying to play it on Genecyst can prove extremely frustrating (save/load, save/load, etc.) You should be able to copy your Genecyst PSIV save and/or savestate and rename it to work with KGen. Hope this helps.
